Streaming Video

http://www.ripbs.org/Education/video_streaming.html
PBS shows that video streaming allows teachers acces to many clips for their curriculum over the internet. There is science, social studies, language arts, math, and health courses available for the teachers through different databases. The teacher can watch a certain clip of the video or the entire thing. Streaming video is only the transfer of videos online. PBS tries to promote teachers to sign up for their streaming video program by allowing the access of 4,000 length and 44,000 clips of videos over the internet. There are over ten subjects that are included in these videos. Lesson plans can be sampled, teacher guides, reports of videos and clips, access from their own home, and many different databases with photos. Video streaming can catch the eye of the students while allowing them to be accessed all over the country. The videos are current and up to date.

Education has grown into being used to all of the new technology advancements in the world. Through computers, videos, digital cameras, visual field trips, and now video streaming. Why not be able to see a clip or entire length of an educational video that goes along with the curriculum? The teacher normally has to find the video in the library, find the part of the movie they want to show, and sometimes pay for this. Through video streaming, the teacher will be able to access the video for free and look at the clips in an easier way.

Research can be conducted in seeing if this is really fair for those in the video. They are probably not gaining as much money for this than they would like to. This is kind of like the tv shows allowing for their viewers to see the last weeks episode online, many were upset about this and went on writers strike. I feel as though this would be easier for the teachers, but is this neccessarily fair to the libraries and the people that work hard on these films to make their money thats needed?

Great post Hayley. I never thought to bring up the issue of whether or not the industry of video streaming is fair to the people behind the video making. I agree that further research would be a good idea to invesigate if this technology is being fair to everyone involved.

You made a good point about streaming video being alot easier and more efficient for tearchers to use instead of searching the library for a video, especially with educational sites like PBS who make these videos available. I also hadn't considered the rights of the people who made the video. Maybe sites like PBS who have the videos could charge a membership fee to cover the cost of the videos.

From what I read, video streming was a paid subscription based tool that can be used in the classroom. I am not very familier with how things work as of buying the rights of copywrited things but I would assume some sort of an agreement would be worked out with whomever who is responsible for video clips. It would be illegal to use someones words, images, or videos whithout them knowing. I am sure that these people have been paid or have agreed for their stuff to occur in video streaming but I do understand your concern.

You made a lot of great points on your post that I didn't even think of. Like how streaming video is easier then searching for a video in the library, or how video streaming could hurt people that work behind video making. Very good stuff, you obviously put a lot of thought into this, great job.

I like your article and I agree with the idea that since there is sooo many videos out there, it will definitly give teachers a larger pool of articles and lesson plans to choose from. I bet teachers today, that have been in the field for a while are wishing this stuff was around before when they got into education!

Hayley good post! You had a lot of different views involved with this topic which were very interesting. Your talk about streaming video being a well developed piece of technology used in the classroom and your debate in your last paragraph; the article really was informative and developed to have the reader look more into the topic. Great job!
